CHINA AND CHINOISERIE: THE FAR UTOPIA AS LAND OF HAPPINESS, ORDER, SCIENCE AND PLEASURE FOR THE EUROPEAN UPPER CLASS SINCE THE 16TH CENTURY——HISTORY AND EXAMPLES WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON FRANKONIA
中国与中国风:自16世纪作为欧洲上层社会之幸福,秩序,科学和娱乐寄托的远东乌托邦——基于法兰克尼亚的历史和案例
The legendary traveler Marco Polo was the first who brought the fairy tales and faboulous news from Cathay (North China) to Europe. After about 150 manuscripts in diverse old Italian and French idioms, in Latin and German the first printed and widely spread edition of his travel stories came out in the Frankonianmetropole Nuremberg 1477. Marco Polo inflamed the interest for a Chinese world of wonders and this idea spread in the European high society with rising effects on architecture, landscape gardening, fashion and crafts through the centuries. Jesuit missionaries at the Chinese imperial court, sailors, globetrotters and merchants enforced the gentlefolks' desire to live and make love in stylish Chinese surroundings. However, there was a lack of real and very costly Chinese arts and crafts and in addition the wish of the European touch in it gave birth to a 'Do It Yourself' - campaign which supplied whole Europe with products nearly or combined with things of real Chinese origin. We will see a lot of great and little examples of such 'Chinoiserie' in various fields – especially from Frankonia but also from Italy, France and Sweden. A closer look will be taken at the historical background of the cultural transfer from Asia to Europe to expand our understanding of the European devotion and passion for an exotic paradise named China.
